MathAtPlay Identity + Website

Naming, Logo, Website Architecture and Design, DVD packaging concept

MathAtPlay is a project organized by
the Madison Metropolitan School District to provide educational resources to parents, educators and other caregivers
of young children.

Kari K Design collaborated with the school district's project manager, educator and web developer. Kari named the project and organized and designed the MathAtPlay website.

The name MathAtPlay carries dual meaning—math is being used during playtime, and math skills are at play in the child's
life as they learn and grow. The goal of the project is to provide caregivers with fun ways of integrating problem solving skills into their child's everyday life. For example, by playing with blocks, children are also learning to recognize spatial and proportional relationships. The skills they learn with blocks can be put into practice with any number of future activities, including maneuvering a vehicle into a parking spot.

It was important to keep the mood of the project bright and playful, not only because it is a project about children, but because the educators wanted the caregivers to understand
that learning can and should be fun for their kids, and shouldn't be a source of pressure to perform.

Kari K Design was given the task of creating an organized structure for the collection of documents and links in three different languages. Kari developed multiple systems for organizing the content based on age, topic, type of content and language. Using color-coding, keywords and simple navigational hierarchies, the site was transformed from a uncategorized list of links into a branded environment that is easy to navigate. The whole project was completed in eight weeks, including production of the website.
